catalytic con. removal

I'm in the process of modifying my '84 Bronco II for off-road. Since removing the cat con and fabricating a dual exhaust, the engine runs poorly (misfiring, backfires, etc.) Do I disable the computer?, install new o2 sensors?, I just bought a new remanufactured Motorcraft carb. I 've read so many reports of how well the 2.8 runs w/o the cat. so what do I need to do?
