1986 broncoII with a 1984 2.8L swap HELP PLEASE its not work

I swaped out a bad 1986 2.9l witha 1984 2.8l and the truck seams to have a hick up. at times it runs great and other it seams like it it geting to little or to much fuel. can the ecm from the 86 be doing this this? and no I do not have a 1984 ecm. and i was told if i did it would not work with the 1986 over drive trans. I NEED HELP PLEASE!!!
