Bendix Gear

Post by joeyy »

My starter keeps slipping on the flywheel. I'm pretty sure its the bendix gear, a new one is only 10 bucks but do I need any special tools/knowledge to change just the gear?

I seriously doubt its just the bendix gear. this is a known problem on these vehicles. some idiot probably had the tranny out and didnt put the spacer in.

well I pulled off my starter today and took out the gear. It looks pretty rough for wear, so I ordered a new BWD gear and its being shipped. My starter looks pretty old and its pretty dirty inside, so I'm going to take a wire brush to it later and clean it up a bit.

So I'm really really really really really late to reply to this thread because I got out of the Ford world for awhile.

But yes out of the 10 or so Rangers/bii and that I have owned with a 2.9 in them I would say half of those have had Bendix and flywheel issues. I would say that makes it fairly common

Ok so yours never had the issue. There are also people out there with 250k on an a4ld that's never been serviced, doesn't mean they don't commonly have issues.

I have had 5 2.9s that had Bendix issues (which was cuased by other issues as mentioned in my original comment) and know plenty of others who had the same issue which to me made it a common problem at the time of comment.

Perhaps my comment cpuld have been worded differantly but it was over 7 years ago and I was probably still in my know it all stage at 23yo.
