Well as you are letting off the throttle it pings, it seems to do it as the throttle plate is closing almost like the fuel is leaning out.

I just swapped the 2.9 from my B2 over to my 89 ranger and now when you are at cruising speed or when you let off the gas to shift it pings. I don't think its bad gas since I always use shell and have never had this problem. I'm going to try to get ahold of a timing light but it didn't ping in my b2...

Sounds like the motor on the side of the transfer case is shot

There is a regulator on the side of the intake that was clogged on mine and I cleaned it out and it ran great after that. I'd start there.

I would check the ignition switch sounds like the guts are hanging up. if it keep going even when the engine is running then it sounds like your starter is hanging up on something. or the soleniod isn't working

2.8's and 2.9's came with a group size 65 battery so if your van is a 65 that would be the battery that could go into your b2

If you overheat they will crack. Mine overheated but didn't crack so it all depends. If you go to car-part.com you can find used heads. If not look to craigslist.

Like every says if you don't mind trimming a bit then you could fit 33's. I fit 33's stock with the fenders cut now I fit 36's with a six inch lift with no rubbing. If you need pics:
