Re: oil dipstick tube

$90 is pretty steep, especially when it is not refundable and a lot of the dealerships don't do a very good job of ordering older parts. Dave is right, or at least the 2.9 in the back yard is a press in. Try to find a straight punch the won't quite fit in the bottom of the tube, bevel the end of the...

Re: Emissions test

It will do about 60 in 3rd gear at 6000, that won't get you a ticket on the interstate. (not where I live anyway) Run the rpm's up to 4500-5000 in the gears, watch the speed and figure how fast you are going in each gear, you can do that around town. You said a hint of black smoke, that is more than...

Re: Emissions test

Yes, it actually does more good than harm in most cases to get the rpm's up ever so often. Keeping the vehicle in a lower gear while driving in city and obeying the speed laws will most often do the trick. Casual driving in stop and go is an engine killer, the engine gets warm, but is not operated a...

Re: Manual Transmission question

CV drive shaft, if I'm correct, this could very well be the end result.
Image
Replace the drive shaft with a double cardone from your favorite parts store.
These have u-joints and are direct replacements.

Re: Emissions test

The EGR gasket goes under the block plate where the EGR was in 86-87.

Re: motor questions

84 is a 2.8, those were gear driven from the crank to the cam, not much can go wrong there, your problem could be in the distributor.

Re: 302 motor

About 307.5 cubic inches. First question is, why is it apart if it was just rebuilt 6 months ago? So far as I know, the stock intake will bolt on with the carb and work fine. Stock everything should be all you need, only you can determine what you need. Be aware that the C4 and C5 are both 3 speeds,...

Re: Motor Swap?

I agree with Dave, the 2.9 is near bullet proof, making it the ideal small SUV engine. If you either rebuild or replace with another 2.9, you will avoid some problems associated with swapping, going to a 4 cylinder will require another bell housing at a minimum, and probably the complete transmissio...

Re: only drives in reverse?

Junk the auto for aluminum scrap and convert it to a 5 speed.
It is considerable work and is going to cost about the same as rebuilding the auto,
but mostly all that goes wrong with sticks is a clutch and you can do that yourself in a weekend or less.

Re: Transmission interchange?

That was one of the reasons I ofted to change the trans/transfer case on my B2 when I swapped in the 4.0.
The bushing for the M5od are like $16 from the dealer.
I do wish I could have kept the lower first gear in the TK5 tho.

Re: Age old question about tire size

The curiosity comes from wondering what the rpm's are at 55 mph with the 205's
My 86 ran about 2100 at 55, 5th gear with 205's and 3.45 gears.
Aftermarket tach, no idea how correct it was.

Re: Transmission interchange?

Is that for a complete shifter?
The one that i replaced in my TK5 some years back was only sold as a complete unit, they were $50+ then.

In Louisiana? Well I have it on good authority they have winter there too, just a different type than we have in the northern climes.
The 215's will work great.
Does your truck have a tach in it? Curiosity.

Re: Age old question about tire size

Google search turned up 44 is 3.73 regular axle (non limited slip). Thanks for the turn in the right direction. Tag on the door also calls for 205/75/15. Tiny. They are tiny, going to 235's will probably give you an increase in mpg, but you will loose a little on the take off. The speedometer chang...
