Re: Picked up an 8.8 today. Need a bit of info

Thats what I was talking about. I tried to brake loose the nut but there was no moving it. Im going to tack weld the inside of it to make sure it stays in place. I have to drill the hole bigger in the perches before I can put it on. I am from Baton Rouge LA. Here is a link to there website. Might ha...

Re: Picked up an 8.8 today. Need a bit of info

I had to drive about an hour to pick it up. I called all my local yards and they wanted $250.00 for the complete axle. Then I came across pull-a-part about an hour away. It was HEAVEN! They price everything based on part, not the vehicle it comes out of. You can even buy a 30 day warranty for each p...

Re: Picked up an 8.8 today. Need a bit of info

One more thing, I just pulled the tag off the axle and it says 3L73 which means 3.73's with Traction Lock. I researched this and they are labeled as a limited slip. When I read what they do( lock, but unlock for turns) it sounds alot like a locker. Is that what it is?

Re: Picked up an 8.8 today. Need a bit of info

I didnt look at how many miles were on it :mad2: I did take off the cover and let the oil drain out. Everything looks brand new, no rust of chipped teeth. I have turned the axles by hand and it is very easy and smooth with no noise. I was going to go tomorrow to pick up the front axle because I ran ...

Picked up an 8.8 today. Need a bit of info

Picked up an 8.8 today from a 93 explorer. It has 3.73's which was the best out of 18 explorers in the yard. Now I have two quick questions. 1.) at the top of the housing, there was an electrical switch attatched. It just unsnapped when I took it off. What is this for? did some explorers come with t...

Re: Few more questions before I tackle my build

I painted it back to factory color which was 7F dark metallic blue but the orange peel is so bad it would take forever to sand and buff it. This time im going with a lighter blue metallic. More of a candy color.

Few more questions before I tackle my build

Im going Saturday to pick up an explorer 8.8 from a junk yard for $78.00. I have a choice between 18 explorers on the lot so hopefully Ill find one with 3.73's or higher. When setting up the pinion angle for a lift, should it be at the factory 6 degree angle? Or do I have to adjust it for a lift? 2....

Re: SAS turn radius

Thanks for all the info and the Link to that site. I am going to take it one step at a time and I am going to start with the 8.8 rear. Ive been making a small list of info and plan to get an 8.8 this coming Saturday. Im hoping to find one with 4.10's since there are so many 91-94 explorers. I will b...

Re: SAS turn radius

Also, What do I look for when looking for D35 parts? I keep getting Jeep rear D35's in all of my searches. Know a good place?

Re: SAS turn radius

I dont have alot of experience in conversions and fab work at all. I am good with a metal and welding. Im more knowledgeable about axles and engines then your average person. I KNOW for a fact that I can make it work. However, I still would like something simple to tinker with first just as an exper...

Re: SAS turn radius

I will take your advice on the explorer. They are in junk yards by the droves around here. It would also be a good learning experience before getting into the major Fab work. The 4.0L will be alot more power and torque then my 2.9L. I will also have stronger axles to go with it. I guess I can re-rep...

Re: SAS turn radius

When I said you guys were stuck on the D44's, I didnt mean that in a bad way. I just mean I dont think I will be using the full potential of a 44 and it would be overkill. For this rig, I will be driving on the road more then off. Any 45minute-an hour trip for some trail riding, I will drive it ther...

Re: SAS turn radius

So the explorer 8.8 is not as wide as the F-series 8.8? I read that the explorer 8.8 was 58" wide, my GM 12 bolt came from a full size truck and was 59" wide so it seems it would be in the same category. So I am going to take it that we are pretty stuck on the D44. I will take everyones ad...

Re: SAS turn radius

I have tried that on several occasions but noone is anywhere near me in Louisiana. There are also very few Broncos in general around here whether it be the BII, Full size, or EB. Thats another reason I was looking for an explorer. I originally thought the D35 was a straight axle. For me, it really c...
