Wow, I did'nt know the Bronco had a "check oil" light. So it senses a low level ? ? . . . . not hot oil? And so I don't have a constant idiot light on, do ground the wire or tape it off? Thanks, Dave Man, i gotta get my lazy butt moving and finish this motor ! I was the guy asking a bunch ...

What that thing in the side of the oilpan?

I may have messed up . The '87 2.9 motor I'm rebuilding had a fitting in the left side of the oilpan that accepts a "single-wire" probe of some sort. ( Very close to the starter). Whats it for? I'm guessing a oil temp probe? I'm going back together and hope I can I do without it? I ask bec...

Boogwar, Hey thanks for that timely info. I'm reassembling my 2.9 right now. Total teardown replacing the mains, cons and cam bearings. And new bore/pistons/rings, cam, lifters, oil pump, timing chain/sprks., valve job/with old valves. Anyway, the heads are going on and then I was just gonna clean t...

Yeah maybe, but it was my bad for just pulling the rings out of the box without looking at the box carefully. After the big flap is openned on the ring-set box, there's three more smaller flaps over the partitioned sections. Each of the three flaps were marked what ring was under it. I just totally ...

I got the answer from Federal Mogul. The box was partitioned off with the three types of rings dropped in the right partition ... and marked. Once I took 'em out I was screwed. Anyhow,: "all dark = moly coated =bottom ring. " dull metal sealing face = top ring. Got a ring compressor to now...

Been a while, getting back to the 2.9 rebuild.

Hi all, it's been since last June that I was tearing the spare motor apart for a rebuild. The bored, cleaned and painted Ford blue bare block has been sitting 'till now waiting for me. :D Finally got started this week-end. Verified main brg oil clearances and now the cranks in. Checked fresh bore/pi...

Heating until the green locktite Ford puts on them softens up, makes then easy to remove.

Done only with all traces of flammables removed!

Sure is ... I extended mine 3" after I did a 3" body lift and the lever ball-end barely stuck up thru the rubber floor boot. IIRC, it's a three piece assembly. 1) The shift mechanism which attaches to the side of the transfer case. It includes a very short shifter shaft as part of it. 2) A...

Yeah, I'm a little lost about what's different about '87 and '88 heads. Something major, like the angle the ports exit the casting? Where the '87 manifolds MUST be used with the heads? Or what? My motor i'm rebuilding is a '87 but I'm putting in my '88 BII 4WD. Sooo, between '87 and '88, is there re...

amberbrush, your post about the different Y-pipes ... very familiar. I have an '88 ... y-pipe has the oval inlet to the 27" long"dual cat" pipe section. I also have a '87 motor and exhaust system ... has the y-pipe with two round outlets which feed into a "cat pipe section" ...

Well I'm finding out what life's like when you choose to rebuild a motor. I started out planning to do it with ecomomics a strong consideration. (only replace whats really needed). Well, the more time you invest in the job, the more inportant doing it totally right becomes Ya know,...time is money t...

FWIW, I'm rebuilding a 2.9 with 140k miles on it. My trusty machine shop guy said the valve guides in the heads are pretty slpppy...valves wobble too much. Intake valves all have a excessively wide seat area. My compression test revealed 110-120 psi across all six cylinders. ( Don't know why yours w...

006 piston clearance and .015 wall taper. You meant .0015" right? When I measured , I checked four places in the bore where the piston rings travel ... from TDC to BDC ... 0* and 90* out from pin. Combining all the six cylinders ...each measured at the four spots, (24 total measurements,) tigh...
