could be that the valve seals were not seated properly. thats where i'd start looking.

yep have the same problem on my86 b2 I ground the crack and welded it, added a piece of flat sotck over it and welded it in place. still flexes when you close the windows.

by firing system do you mean checking the plugs and wires ( have the plugs been changed lately? or the wires?) could be out of the firing order.
