In months or searching for my current B2, I realized that a B2 low on coolant almost always had a blown head gasket or cracked head. One easy way to check, warm up the engine. Carefully remove the radiator cap. Put a latex glove over the filler, secure it with a tight rubber band. Plug the overflow hose. Pull the coil wire. Crank the engine and watch the glove. If it inflates you need a head gasket or a head. If you need to replace a head, be sure you get one from an 89 or newer 2.9 Ford redesigned the casting in 89 to try to avoid the cracked heads. Obviously, it doesn't always work!
