2 wheel drive with a stock transfer case????

Post by Psycho_4x4 »

I recently bought a 1989 Bronco II, it is only 2 wheel drive but has a transfer case on it that looks to be factory capped off where the front drive shaft would go. How easy would it be to connect a front axle and drive shaft to my truck and make it 4x4?

I know its a dummy case now after further research.... So I need to get a front axle since my front end is on its last leg anyway, then install the real transfer case where the dummy is and plumb it all in right? doesn't seem too hard to me.

Not to hard at all really. Make sure you get a manual shift transfer case though, you don't want to deal with trying to wire in the electric shift controls.

Yes for sure Bill, in my research I found an extensive "how to" on installing the actual transfer case where the dummy case is.... Then all I need is a front drive shaft and front axle. Unless the gear ratio in the rear is different on a 4 wheel drive. Do you know anything about that?

its a direct bolt in.find out what you have for rear gears, and find a front end to match

Not sure about your area but around here, if you have the means/place to do it, the cheapest solution is to buy a complete parts truck. Something that is non operational like a blown engine or trans, take the parts you want and sell the rest for scrap. In that case you could swap out the rear axle if the gear ratio didn't match.
Here are the axle codes.... http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html
